Behind The Lens

Location

Durdle Door is a sea-worn arch on th Jurassic coast of Dorset. As you walk down the path to the beach there are a few spots where you can stop to get a great view.

Time

We were staying quite some distance from Durdle Door, so travelling there meant we arrived at mid-day.

Lighting

Though many of the best shots of this site are often from the golden hour, mid-day lighting is actually quite good to get the summery feel of of the cliffs and beach.

Equipment

I shoot with Micro 4/3 equipment which is easy to travel with. The camera was an Olympus E-P5, and the lens is an M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8, handheld.

Inspiration

This has always been on my bucket-list, and when we were in Dorset we had to get to this spot. The limestone arch looks kind of like some sort of prehistoric animal grazing in the sea.

Editing

The shot is a panorama of several verticle shots. The view is enormous and I wanted to capture so much in one shot. Post processing included some motion blur on the sea, to get a softer look, like in a long exposure.

In my camera bag

My travel kit all fits in a small sling bag, holding the E-P5, an M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8, an Olympus 40-150 f2.8, and a 2xtele-extender. Included as well is a handful of fully charged batteries, a spare SD card, some cleaning supplies and a rain cover.

Feedback

The Jurassic coast is a great place to hike and wander with your camera. Lot's of opportunities for seascape photos. I lean toward the wider 35mm full frame equivalent prime lens for such shots. An ND filter and tripod might help for long exposures of the water.
