Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Jergel's Rhythm Grille (jergels.com) during a special fundraising music concert "Diva's Go Pink" for breast cancer.

Time

The concert was in doors with stage lighting.

Lighting

This shot was taken quickly just before the singer went on stage. The lighting was low off stage shadow light.

Equipment

Canon Rebel i5 with a Canon 70 -200mm, f/2.8 lens. No other equipment was used other than my elbow on my wheelchair's arm rest supporting my camera and lens.

Inspiration

The straw hat with streaming pink ribbons, the singer's pink hair and her beautiful profile caught my eye! I said to myself that is timeless. That is art.

Editing

This shot was taken in very low light in jpg format. I used Darktable software to make color corrections and other edits to create the feeling I wanted.

In my camera bag

Since taking this picture I switched to Olympus for the low weight and quality of their lenses. My camera bag is packed with two extra camera batteries, two sets of batteries for the METZ 64 AF-1 digital flash; all of Olympus's Pro lenses; a EM1- Mark II camera and a EM1-Mark III camera; a color card; lens cleaning kit; a pencil flash light.

Feedback

My personal preference is to use existing light. All modern cameras take excellent pictures especially when using quality lens. This picture is an example of a low cost camera matched with a kick ass lens. I had many great shots that I thought were great only to see them on my monitor to be inferior digitally for reproducing a print because the lens was inferior. I like photographing bands using stage lighting only. I shot in RAW and in low light I use the best and fastest lens I can afford. Experiment with the max ISO to use with your camera that gives you the lowest digital noise that is acceptable to for your project or your client. I first saw this singer's hat. She was moving in the shadows toward the side of the stage. I started shooting and kept shooting. I was lucky to snap that moment when she stopped just before moving behind a post. Click away and have funny!
