Behind The Lens

Location

Even though I'm an amateur photographer, as a professional artist I have an instinctive feel for what makes "a good picture". With 20 minutes to spare before an appointment, I was wandering along the river path when this scene caught my eye. It was a perfect balance of light and pure colour within the sharpness of the Winter morning, and I was compelled to capture that precise moment. The arches of the two bridges work well with the reflections on the water to lead the eye around the scene naturally. The image was captured on my mobile phone, a Google Pixel 3a XL.

Time

I adore crisp Winter light, especially when the sun shines because it intensifies every colour. That morning I had 30 minutes to spare before my bank appointment so I decided to take a short walk along the river path, hoping to catch sight of the two resident swans. I remember the morning well because, after so many days of wind and rain, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and all the colours were so vivid.

Lighting

It was the natural Winter light and colour that first caught my attention

Equipment

The only thing I had with me that day was my mobile phone - a Google Pixel 3a XL It actually takes amazing photographs which can then be 'tweaked' on Photoshop if necessary. This particular pic didn't need any additional help.

Inspiration

It was one of those situations where you're not actually thinking of photography [I was waiting for a bank appointment], but the subject was simply shouting out to be captured.

Editing

In this instance, no.

In my camera bag

As well as my Google Pixel 3a XL mobile phone, I usually have the Fuji Film Finepix 7000S on hand. It's old now and needs replaced [probably with a mirrorless Canon, finances permitting], but has served me well over the years.

Feedback

Always be aware of the natural light and how it plays on colour, and keep your eyes open for anything that might just 'pop up' or catch your eye. There is a great photograph in every situation, any time of every day, and in all weather conditions
