I took this photo in Rock Creek State Park, Iowa, USA. I was rookie photographer then and I had just learned about “long exposure” after learning, I went into practice.Time
I took this photo at sunrise during spring. I was lucky enough that a storm had just passed and left those clouds behind.Lighting
Like I said before, I was rookie photographer back then and one of the first I’ve learned was that golden hour was the best lighting so that’s why I decided my fist long exposure will during sunrise.Equipment
Canon 80D with its kit lens ef 18-135mm. Tripod and the darkest ND filter I’ve ever seen. Can’t remember how f-stops it was because after taking this photo, I was putting my gear away, I had the ND filter on my hand and walking back to my truck where my black lab dog was, he must’ve thought I had a treat for him, got excited and tripped me with his leash causing the brand new ND filter to go flying in the air and crashing onto rocks by the water……no more ND filter. I’ve tried replicating this shot with other filters and without my dog but all attempts ended in failure. So this is one is an only and unique photo.Inspiration
When I picked up the camera, I’ve challenged myself to master every genre of photography, during this time it was the turn of “long exposure landscapes” to be mastered and I haven’t yet, I continue to shoot this types of photos during different times of the day and am I currently stuck (three summers and counting) to get a good long exposure of the Milky Way, I know that it may be considered “astrophotography” but the galaxy is a landscape of the universe.Editing
I edit all my photos with Adobe Lightroom for iPad and this one was no exception. I can’t quite remember all the edits I did, I’m sure we can see it by pulling the metadata but I can tell you that the whites and highlights were turned all the way down to zero. And of course I up the saturation a bitIn my camera bag
Well I started off with my iPhone then to a Canon T3i that a friend lended to me till I was able to get my own, after some dedicated savings I upgraded to the Canon 80D and the DJI Mavic Pro. Started doing paid jobs and after a few I upgraded to the Canon EOS R with the EF-RF lens adapter. I bought three lenses, the sigma 18-35mm f1.8, Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L USM Mark II and the Canon EF-70-200 f2.8 L IS version one. I also upgraded my drone to the DJI Mavic Air 2s.Feedback
Research, go shoot, fail and embrace and study the fails. True learning and wisdom is in one’s failures. The more you shoot and the more you learn from failures the quicker you will learn valuable lessons. It also has a perk I love, it makes you humble and hungry for knowledge. In my case, I love listening/reading/watching other photographers technique. I learn something new every day in photography, literally.
