Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my ex-wife father’s shop, the motorcycle (a Harley Davison) actually belongs to one his friends and every winter he parks the bike inside the shop.

Time

When I took this photo, it was on my early days with a camera, I was absorbing tons of knowledge and taking tons of photos. I failed a lot but that was my intend, I need to know why certain techniques work for certain situations and the only way to fully learn was going to be looking at all the horrible photos Ive taken and learn from them. I believe it was some time in the afternoon, what I do remember about this photos was that I was trying to black out the background by having a narrow F-stop, it was either F8 or F11, and have light concentrated on the bike for details. As you can see, it didn’t quite work out but loved how the image turned out. Is a cool failure ????

Lighting

As I said before, I wanted to have lighting concentrated on the bike but at the time I didn’t have any studio lights like I do now. So I closed the shop’s door half way down. It helped but definitely not what I would’ve done now that I know more.

Equipment

I took this photo with the Canon 80D with its kit lens 35-135mm(?)

Inspiration

I was eager to master my camera and the basics of photography, such as the exposure triangle. Back then I was all over the place, I was learning and finding which type of photography I like the most. I came to find out that I enjoy all the photography types, however, I narrowed it down to wildlife/sports because the challenges they present, new challenges every time.

Editing

Well I wasn’t only learning how to take photos, I was also learning how to edit them, specially the ones that require certain editing methods. I’ve been using Adobe Lightroom since day one and that’s were this photo was edited on. I know, I increased the clarity and dehazed the photo almost 100%. Cropping was minimal then I chose a black & white profile for it.

In my camera bag

The Canon EOS-R with the EF-RF adapter and the EF 24-70mm F2.8 USM L is my daily driver, I always take the camera with me no matter where I go. Not to a fear of loosing an opportunity but more to find opportunities. When I take my gear/bag then I have a Canon 80D, Sigma len 18-35mm F1.8, The EF 70-200 F2.8 L USM IS Version one, battery grips for both cameras, tons of extra batteries, variable ND filter for the sigma and the 24-70mm, a monopod, tripod, microphone and a camera strap.

Feedback

Perspective will make your photo stand out from others. Don’t just stand, point and shoot. Try different angles, elevations and such and I promise you will surprise with what you see and find. In this one, I put my camera almost on the floor and by the back tire looking to the front.
