Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Chefchaouen, the blue city in northern Morocco.

Time

It was taken in the late afternoon last May and during Ramadan. It was that very quiet time between the day tourists leaving the town and the locals coming out to do their shopping to prepare to break their fasts at sunset.

Lighting

The sun had begun to lower in the sky heightening the vivid blue of the walls.

Equipment

This was shot using my Sony a77ii and a Tamron 18-270 lens as I didn't want to carry too much equipment around with me on my trip.

Inspiration

I had been looking forward to my photo trip to northern Morocco, but nobody had told me how much the locals disliked having their photos taken. It was very easy to take photos of the shops and streets in this town that is a photographer's dream. However, a totally different matter if you want a person in the shot. I managed to take this photo when the shopkeeper was looking away. The contrast between the traditional costume and his modern trainers caught my eye.

Editing

Minimal post processing in Lightroom. Minor adjustments to the lighting and contrast.

In my camera bag

I usually have either my Sony a77ii or my Sony a99ii. I use my a77ii when I am travelling and my a99ii for local photo shoots. I use a couple of Tamron lens, but like the 18-270 for when I am travelling as it keeps the bag light. My other favourite combination is my a99ii and a prime lens. I have just bought a Sony a6000 to take on hikes as I find the other gear rather heavy.

Feedback

Morocco is packed with amazing photo opportunities, but you have to be very aware of cultural sensitivity as many people are not comfortable with a lens close up. I was lucky to travel in Ramadan and the streets were quiet.
