Location
I am luckily enough to live near the beach in El Puerto de Santa Maria, a town in Southern Spain. Paradise for 10 months a year and tourist hell the other two. I took this photo from the beach behind my house on the first day of the tourist season.Time
I made my way down to the beach as the heat of the day was cooling off at around 9.30 p.m. Most of the crowds had left the beach and only the odd fisherman was down there setting up for the night's fishing ahead.Lighting
Our best sunsets are when there is patchy cloud, quite a rare occurrence here. I was lucky that day as there was enough cloud and haze to really reflect the sun and turn the whole sky into shades of orange, which were reflected on the sea and sand.Equipment
It was taken with a Sony a77 and my Tamron 18-200 mm lens. I usually take my camera along with me when I walk my dogs in the evening, just to see if there is anything photo worthy. It was not a planned session, so I didn't have a tripod or any other equipment with me - hard to carry around with 3 lively labradors to walk.Inspiration
I love photographing the sunsets down here in Spain. The most dramatic ones are in winter when a storm is approaching, but the summer sunsets are rather boring with just the sun on the horizon. I was lucky that day to have the two fishermen in the right place at the right time and for the light cloud creating amazing reflections.Editing
I shoot in RAW and did some minor adjustments in Lightroom, but the photo needed hardly any post-processing.In my camera bag
I am currently working on a 365 a day photo and nearly always have my Sony a77ii camera with me. I usually use my Tamron 18-200 mm as I am never sure what is going to catch my eye. I love working with my Sony 50 mm 1.4 lens as well and often have it with me.Feedback
Patience. Get to know your surroundings and the local climate conditions. I go down to the beach at least 5 days a week to watch the sunset and I get around 1 good sunset shot a month, if that. More in winter, fewer in summer. Persistence, patience and knowing your subject.
