This was captured at a Moscow rally demanding punishment for police who detained an anti-corruption journalist Ivan Golunov. Officers in riot gear clashed with protesters during the unauthorised march in Golunov's support. The photo was taken not long before the police charge started. They tried to prohibit me to take this photo.Time
This was about 2 p.m. on June, 12, 2019. I usually take my photo gear with me to such public cases.Lighting
Because of mass arrests which had started there I was standing by a police prisoner van trying to capture the SWAT actions. The sun shone brightly but at the van's side there was shade so I could take photos from shade into the lit parts of the street.Equipment
I used Sony SLT-A58 with kit lens, no tripod, no flash. I like Sony gear because it's lightweight and compact: It's convenient to work with it in a crowd when one has to move quickly and work under pressureInspiration
I wanted to cover the march where tens of thousands people united to demand my fellow-journalist Ivan Golunov's release. In the process the interior minister admitted that Golunov's guilt had "not been proven", and that an internal inquiry had been launched. The march became a call for those responsible for Golunov's detention to be held accountable. By 2019 mass rallies in Moscow became a usual thing and I wanted to depict how people demand democratic changes in this country.Editing
I wanted more dramatism in this photo, so I decided to make it B&W though usually when I do nature, architecture or portraits I prefer colors. I usually use Adobe Lightroom to process my snapshots and this time I did the same. ByIn my camera bag
Before 2019 New Year I decided to make myself a present and purchased a Sony 6400. So, now when I'm going out I put it into my photography backpack. I have it with 3.5-5.6/18-135 kit lens and I usually add a Canon EF 16-35 1:28 and a Canon 70-200 1:2.8 lenses which I inherited from my retired colleague, both with Sigma mount converters MC-11 Canon EF-E. Sometimes I also take a tripod and a flash. It depends what I'm going to take photos of.Feedback
The first rule of working at such rallies is your own security. So, try not to find yourself in the middle of a clash though it's not so easy to stop oneself when you're hunting for the best shot. One has to monitor the situation all the time to see where the greatest heat is and this means that there are the most interesting developments take place. Actually, one has no time to change the exposition and I usually use AUTO mode at such moments making sure to edit photos later in Lightroom and Photoshop.
