In 1967, iconic American photographer Irving Penn photographed a group of San Francisco Hell’s Angels - a photograph that became one of his classics.

Last year I set out to recreate that shot, but instead of using a medium-format camera like Penn did, I used 4x5” Toyo large format field camera on TMAX 400 black and white film.

If you are familiar with or look up the the original Penn photograph, you may notice that my group shot is mirrored compared to the original. After all, you have to respect the original work and do something a little different. :-)

Also, a wrinkle to the story is that the backdrop used in this shot used to belong to my friend and photographer Gordon Munro, who used to be Penn’s studio manager in New York(!).
