Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the northern shore of the lake Champfèr (Lej da Champfèr) near the city of St. Moritz in the swiss region Upper Engadine (canton Graubünden)

Time

I was at this place for the sunrise, but it took a long long time till the sun climbed over the surrounding mountain peaks and reached the trees on the small peninsula

Lighting

The warm light on the autumnal discolored larches was beautiful but I wish there would have been a little less wind for a perfect reflection in the water

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D Mk IV with an EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM (ISO 100, 75mm, f/11, 13 sec), a ND 1.8 filter and a Vanguard tripod

Inspiration

I love the mountains in autumn. Especially in the Upper Engadine there are many larchs wich glow in that beautiful warm yellow tones. In combination with the clear blue sky (which is normally not a loved subject of photographers) and the snow covered mountains it's just irrestible to me and I try to catch some autumn pictures every year in another region of the alps

Editing

Usually I have some work with my landscape photos but here I just had to adjust the contrast and the saturation just a little bit

In my camera bag

I have a relatively large selection of lenses for landscape photography (Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon EF 24-105 f/4 L IS USM), wildlife photography (Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2, Tamron 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 SP Di VC USM, Tamron SP 90mm 1:2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD) and astrophotography (Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 So VC USD), but I pack my backpack depending on the occasion - always taking all lenses makes the backpack just too heavy. In addition, landscape photography always includes a selection of ND and GND filters and a tripod for landscape and astrophotography. I use only one camera body, the Canon 5d Mk IV

Feedback

If you want to take such a picture in the alps just look for a longer period of good weather - this reduces the risk of heavy winds, which would destroy the reflection in the water surface. In this periods the sky is usually clear blue and nearly cloudless. This sky can be a bit boring of course, so look for a good foreground or background so that the sky fills not such big parts of the picture
