Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken by the beach in the Cayman Islands. There were several of these terns, right by the shore, diving for fish. I find "birds in flight" hard to photograph especially considering I'm fairly new to photography. (but I love a challenge!) It must have been somewhat amusing for any onlookers to see me literally moving up and down the beach with my camera....trying to capture a shot. Those birds move fast!

Time

Walking on the beach is one of my all time favorite things to do. And whether its early in the morning, just as the sun is coming up, or with the last bit of evening light, there is always something interesting to see and experience. This photo was taken mid day. The best trick is...stay present in the moment! You will get so much more from the experience. Its so good for the body, mind and soul.

Lighting

I really liked the fact that it was a clear, bright blue sky that day. No clouds etc. at all. I thought the bird would really stand out against the blue background.

Equipment

I have a Nikon D7500 and was using a Nikon 18-200mm lens. (hand-held)

Inspiration

I love being in nature and seeing a variety of wildlife. And I'm always excited when I spot something new. We visit the Cayman Islands often and the wildlife is of course very different than what we have here in Canada. I thoroughly enjoy watching animals in their natural habitat doing what they do. It was so interesting watching these terns flying over the water, intently watching.....then all of a sudden...take a nosedive for a fish.

Editing

There was very little post-processing. I cropped it a little and just played a little with contrast, light, highlights etc.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have a Nikon D7500. Lens: Nikon 18-200, Nikon 55-200, Nikon 18-55mm, and I also have a Sigma 150-600 My usual go to lens has often been the Nikon 18-200mm however recently its been the Sigma 150-600mm.(hand-held....while still getting used to the weight!)

Feedback

Birds in flight are very difficult to master. I'm definitely still working at it!! Best advice? First of all, always try to be present in the moment and be aware of your surroundings....you'll "see" more that way. And secondly, be patient and keep trying! From practice and experience comes success.
