Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken during training course of the sensual photography. The place: apartment rent for the session. So basically home conditions.

Time

It was a November afternoon session and the photo was taken at the very end of the course. Main light source was a set of 3 photographic bulbs (constant light) with an umbrella. The gear I used was my trusty Canon EOS 1DsMarkII with 85/1.8 USM lens. So, not very fast setup. 1DsMarkII is a marvelous camera even today yet usable ISO doesn't exceed 640. So, having quite a dim light I had to balance between image quality, DoF and that it was shot handheld.

Lighting

As already mentioned, due to the late, autumn day time, the ambient light was really poor and we had to use artificial light - in this case it was a still light - bulbs with umbrella. This shot was taken in the bedroom, where most of the space was occupied by the big bed and there were 3 other photographers in the room so, not much space for some big setup. So, we had a single light source yet quite soft.

Equipment

This was shot handheld with Canon 1DsMarkII, Canon 85/1.8 USM lens, ISO400, f/2, 1/60s

Inspiration

This shot was taken at the end of the training course. We all were already a little bit weary, so we took some fun with more spontaneous posing and not trying to get any special shot. And that worked perfectly in this condition. Of course, during the posing we come up with some ideas and were tweaking model poses but still, it was in much more loose fashion, since we had stopped doing actual exercises.

Editing

I always shot RAW, so post-processing is inevitable to some extent. However, in this very case I didn't have to make any hard tweaking. Just the basics: exposure, contrast, some white balancing and of course sharpening.

In my camera bag

In my bag you won't find any special equipment. I like bulky cameras that's why I still use Canon 1DsMarkII - I just love to shoot with this body - the feeling is just phenomenal despite the awkward button operation (basically you have to use both hands to change setups). I am a fan of prime lens and I use mainly 2: Canon 85/1.8 USM (great value for quality) and Sigma 35/1.4 A. I love both lenses and they cover most of my needs. Sometimes I also take 24/2.8 for wider shots. However, recently I shoot more with traditional analog cameras so you can find in my bag also Canon EOS5 which I can use with all my EF lenses. From time to time I also take my MF Mamiya RB67 Pro SD - yes, it is possible to shoot events handheld :-)

Feedback

I've had little experience in shooting nude photos additional distracting factor is the presence of other photographers who watch how you work. The best advice - try not to be too serious - good contact with others on the shot is crucial - with a model with other photographers etc. The best is when you feel as if you're among friends - then you can focus on the work and not to think about others. This is the hardest - focus on work forgetting about all other distractions. When you are relaxed, you reach deeper into your own thinking and do what you really feel.
