Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken under a stairwell in the carpark of a new industrial complex, not too far from my home.

Time

It was around 10 am and the sun was getting a little too high in the sky for typical portraits, so I opted for something a little more edgy with this gobo effect.

Lighting

This was a direct sunlight shot, however there were other walls close by bouncing light around to help soften shadows.

Equipment

I was using a handheld Nikon d810 fitted with a 24-70mm f2.8 Nikon lens for this shot. I was tempted to use fill flash, but felt none was required due to the reflective walls immediately to camera right.

Inspiration

Malina is a stunning model who had just given birth to a baby girl and we both wanted to showcase the beauty and vibrance of a proud new mum.

Editing

I mostly use Photoshop for all my post work. On this occasion I used a black and white layer combined with a cuves layer to help bring out the desired level of contrast.

In my camera bag

For location shoots I always pack my wide, medium and telephoto zoom lenses, along with an on camera flash to help out when the natural light is not being cooperative.

Feedback

I always keep my eyes open for interesting lighting situations, and am often amazed at how much of an impact this can have on an image.
