Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the Brazilian countryside, close to where I live. However it took me a while to discover the path to this waterfall thus it was reward to me to reach the place with a perfect sun behind the trees.

Time

I took this photo early in the afternoon, something between 2 and 4 pm.

Lighting

The lightning of this photo was a great surprise. As it took me some time to find the waterfall I didn't know exactly what I could expect about the sunlight. When I finally arrived, the sun was behind the trees in the top of the waterfall. As I didn't want much flare and my plan was to take a long exposure, I used f/22 while the sun was shaded by the trunks and I finally got the shot. A few moments later the sun was not shaded anymore and would prevent the photo as I wanted.

Equipment

I used a Canon 80D with a Tokina 11-20 f/2.8 with a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I was exploring the region because I've heard about a beautiful waterfall following a small stream but that I knew no one who has reached this place. So my main motivation was to find the supposed waterfall to take, as far as I am concerned, the first photo of this magical place. After a while I realized that this is not a really unknown waterfall but the exploration spirit and the consequent nice shot were motivating.

Editing

I changed the photo to black and white and highlighted the shadows in the water.

In my camera bag

I usually take a Canon 80D, Tokina 11-20 2.8 and 24-70 2.8 and a Canon 100-400. Obviously along with my tripod, ND filter and some snacks.

Feedback

Well, exploring a place where you heard about is always exciting! Indeed, capturing long exposures in waterfalls are not a secret but the advice to search for hidden (or at least uncommon) places. Always preserve the place where you go photographing and make sure your photos will contribute to bring humanity closer to nature.
