It was hot and sticky and muggy outside at four in afternoon when we arrived at our beloved Aberdeen Lake in North Carolina, and I was more than excited to see some fireworks and spend time with my family. Originally, I only brought my camera along to take pictures of the family and maybe a couple of the carnival going on. Instead, when the firework began to boom and all of us were looking up in amazement, I realized that if I didn't capture and symbolize this moment somehow, I might lose it. When I look at this portrait, I can still smell the unhealthy fried foods at the festival; I can still hear children around me shriek in excitement and glee at the colors exploding in front of them; I still feel the boom boom of the explosives in my chest and the crackling of the fire when it fizzled out. These things make me feel alive. I pull this photo out when the day is rainy and I miss simpler times. It is the Fourth of July in my soul when I see this picture.
