This is one of three kinds of quails found in California. They normally are very shy and hide inside scrubs and thick vegetation. During breeding seasons, the male becomes more bold and perches on top of rocks or branches. This one perched higher at about 10 feet off the ground. I enjoyed watching him as the thin morning fog slightly masked the mountain in the background.
