Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our home in Batesville, Indiana. The bluebird is sitting on the arm of our porch swing located just outside our kitchen door. We feed the birds all year round so we have a wide variety of birds visiting our feeders on a regular basis. In addition to the cardinals, blue jays, nuthatches, titmouse and many finches we also get regular visits from red billed woodpecker, red headed woodpeckers and pleated woodpeckers. In this case I got took shot through the kitchen storm door that leads out onto our deck, so I was probably within about 10 or 12 feet of the bluebird.

Time

One morning I noticed the bluebird in a nearby tree and fortunately (despite my wife's objections) I already had a supply of mealworms in the refrigerator. I took a hand full of the warms and put them on the arm of our porch swing and walked back in the house. In a few minutes the bluebird was right where you see him in the photograph gobbling up mealworms. From that point on I would go out each morning about 7:30 and put a handful of warms on the arm of the swing. He would always wait the maple tree near out deck and as soon as I walked back in the house he'd start to feed and I would start taking pictures.

Lighting

This shot was taken in natural early morning light.

Equipment

I used a Nilon D7100 with a nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 hand held.

Inspiration

I often sit on our deck or stand at the kitchen door with my camera in hand and shoot the wide variety of birds that visit our feeders.

Editing

I try to do as little post processing as possible.

In my camera bag

I shoot a lot of high sports so my camera of preference is now my Nikon D500. I still use the 70-200mm f/2.8 for football, baseball, softball and track. When I go inside for volleyball and basketball I use a nikkor 20-70mm f/2.8.

Feedback

Be patient.
