As I was waiting for my friend to go on a photowalk together through the Chesapeake Arboretum in Virginia, I saw this fly resting on a flower.Time
This was right around the afternoon golden hour in the middle of the summer.Lighting
I used the natural sunlight to hi light the colors of both the flower and the bottleneck fly.Equipment
I used my Canon 40D camera.Inspiration
As I waited for my friend, I was pacing through the gardens. I always enjoy using my camera to capture the beauty that I see. I was taking pictures of the bright orange lilies, when the blue bottleneck fly appeared. I had to follow it a bit, but it was a photogenic fly allowing me to point my camera at it without fluttering off.Editing
Honestly, I did not do a lot. I brought out the hi lights and the saturation to make the colors pop a bit more than they already were doing, but mostly the golden sunlight brought out the natural hues and contrasting colors of this photo. In my camera bag
Normally, I simply carry one of my cameras. I have both a Canon 40D and a SX40HS that is a bit easier to carry than the DSLR. Occasionally, I carry both cameras with me depending on the type of photos I want.Feedback
Be willing to capture something that appears ordinary. You never know when a great photo will arrive.
