I wanted to capture a portrait that screamed teen. This model is an accomplished actress and aerialist and is amazing at everything she puts her mind to. Sitting in the couch with a phone, probably not normally her thing!

Location
I’m fortunate to have an amazing space close to my home which offers 3 different studios. This smaller studio designed specifically for portraits and headshots is my favourite area to shoot when I’m opting for studio location.Time
We had been shooting throughout the day with a Indigo and her two siblings. All three are experienced actors. I’ve known them for a few years and photographed their headshots each year. Indigo was interested in working on some editorial ideas with me and this was one of our favourite shots from earlier in the day.Lighting
It’s kind of My ‘go to’ set up for simple portraits and headshots. It was originally recommended by the studio owner who helped educate me in moving from natural light photography to studio. 70cm Elichrom Octabox was used slightly off centre. I really wanted Indigo’s ability to capture a real teen angst vibe, to be the focus of the image. That feeling that, ‘I’m 100% ok with everything, just don’t take the phone’. So although we were in studio, it had to feel like home, with the light focusing on her ‘hanging on the couch at home’ pose. And the phone in the centre.Equipment
Camera: Canon 5DSR Lens: 85mm F1.4 I’m not a big fan of Tripods in studio. I feel restricted. I just like to more around a little too much.Inspiration
I have 2 amazing teenagers. Both girls, who are genuinely good people who I’m proud of. But they are true example of today’s you g people who are forever attached to their phones. I wanted to capture a teen in their natural habitat, from a studio perspective.Editing
Minimal. A little contrast enhancement and some mild saturation of the blues. Ever so slight vignetting. To be honest, what we achieved in camera was pretty much what I wanted. I just tweaked because I can’t help myself! In my camera bag
Camera... 5DSR. I only own two lenses and they give me everything I need. 85mm F1.4 and 24-105mm F4. 3 batteries, 2 CF cards. External flash and battery charger. Business cards. I’m kind of boring ????Feedback
I think finding a model who shares the vision in any portrait is key. Especially with teens. Mostly if you have a fun mood from the beginning and have them understand what you’re working on achieving, you will likely get patience and commitment from the model.
