Here's a shot taken at Godrevy Heritage Coast on a misty morning. I originally planned to shoot Godrevy Lighthouse, but when I arrived on location just before sunrise, I found the misty conditions didn't look overly photogenic.
I jumped back in the car, and decided to head up to the cliffs to the east, near "Hell's Mouth." I had never scouted these cliffs for photography, but with the post sunrise light about to happen soon (my favourite time to shoot), I had to act fast.
I soon found these interesting sea stacks with headlands behind disappearing into the mist. I also quite liked how the mist diffused the horizon - so that the sea and sky merged together for a simple image.
I actually broke two of my (self imposed) golden rules on this shot which I believe contribute to defining my style - but I'm glad I did!...
1 - I never tend to shoot from the cliffs - instead, preferring to shoot from beach level. In this case, it was shoot from the cliffs or not at all at first light!
2 - I rarely shoot the sea with an exposure exceeding half a second. I usually try to show the movement of the waves with a slow shutter speed of around 0.2 - 0.5 seconds. Here though, because the sea was pretty calm and with the presence of the mist, I wanted to use the conditions to create a simple, clean image with a long exposure.
