Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in my backyard garden in North Texas, on a chilly morning. I tend to birdwatch while gardening so I always have my trusty sidekick cameras with me.

Time

I believe this was taken around 8 AM, the sun was just starting to shine a little brighter on that partly cloudy day.

Lighting

I was worried about overexposure since the sun was almost directly behind it but I always take multiple shots and pick the ones that worked. :)

Equipment

I am a self taught photographer so I don't have any fancy equipment, just my two Cannon cameras, (PowerShot SX530 HS and Cannon SX620 HS) and a lot of patience. It's a work of love.

Inspiration

I love birdwatching, but not the kind where you just sit in ambush and wait for birds to appear, instead I do it while gardening. A lot of birds were singing that morning, some louder than others, lots of blue jays and cardinals strutting around. In all that "noise" this wren was singing shyly somewhere hidden in the trees. So I followed my ears to get closer to the location and searched the canopies with my eyes. I spotted the wren and zoomed on it, holding my breath. :) I took several shots while it sang and that is how this picture was selected. To me, this little bird represented a free spirit, a life worth living and singing about it, in spite of all adversity.

Editing

I did not use any post-processing except some cropping, I avoid adding effects, filters or enhancements in general.

In my camera bag

Bag? (laughs) Oh you mean my gardening tools tote. I keep my two cameras in there to snap photos whenever there is something going on while I tend to my flowers (and a cat).

Feedback

My father was an amateur photographer and I inherited the passion I guess. :) We would spend weekends developing the pictures in a dark room, lots of fond memories and awe. I enjoy taking pictures, each one tells a story. It might not be something exquisite but it is a part of who we are and in itself, is an expression of ourselves. I would say just be open and aware of your surroundings and keep your curiosity alive, for it's the driving force of all creativity.
