This image was taken in the Nave at Salisbury Cathedral. I have visited Salisbury and the Cathedral many times before, but my camera club had a speaker who gave us an amazing talk with his pictures of the churches of Wessex. I felt I could add my own interpretation to what is a well publicised image of the Nave in the Cathedral.Time
I telephoned the Cathedral office to find out when the best time of day would give me the best chance of an uninterrupted view along the nave. It was late February and the best time I was given was around 4.30 pm, so there wasn't going to be much light for too long after that. This was obviously going to be a tripod shot. It was however a sunny day.Lighting
Flash was not going to be an answer to low light levels unless it had the power of a star!!, so it made it all the more important that there were few if any other visitors moving around, so that I could keep the ISO low to give less noise.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D mk3, aperture f/11, 3 seconds, focal length 17/1 mm, iso 320. Longish lens plate to get the camera nearer to the surface of the water in the font.Inspiration
Had seen many attempts on Google images, some better but quite a few IMO not as good, solely because they had a far greater distance between the image reflection in the font and the actual view of the altar and ceiling. I would love to go back some time and if there were fewer visitors would like to get the two parts of the image to meet in the middle.Editing
Had to bring out the lighting in photoshop and used it to straighten the verticals in the columns, and of course to desaturate. Almost cost me the shot as the cropping, post straightening, took out a tiny bit of the front spout of the font. Mental note. Allow more space for cropping next time. Had submitted this image in colour in Viewbug previously, but felt there was merit enough in black and white to enter it in one of the Viewbug black and white contests. In my camera bag
Now use the canon 5D mk4. Mk 3 as a spare body. Usually carry a 28-300 l lens which I find almost universal, and the 17-40 canon L lens. Have some others in the canon range but rarely use them. Polarising filter, ND filter, spare batteries and cards. Tripod. Lens cloth and cleaning fluid.Feedback
Have patience. Whilst waiting to get the shot during visitor hours means many people will walk in font of your camera and loiter, whether deliberate or not I try not to think about. At one point two children approached the font and swished their hands in the water which completely ruined the mirror effect for about 10 minutes. Parents obviously felt it was the children's prerogative. Might have been handy to have a diplomat present to ask other visitors to give the photographer just a bit more time before they walk in front.
