Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the meadows by the Warta river. In the Rogialin landscape park in Poland

Time

It was late December sunset about 4:00pm few minutes before sunset.

Lighting

To take photo against the sun is always a challenge for the camera. To be safe and don’t overexpose the sky I used 5 shot bracketing from -2 Ev to +2 Ev to register all the details in shadows.

Equipment

Canon 70D paired with wide angle Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 based On a Tripod.

Inspiration

Alone tree is a good enough photo motive, but when we pair it up with touch of mist and setting sun with nice clouds giving a contrast to the sun it makes perfect composition. The cherry on the cake is a water reflection. I got my feet wet just to get a perfect reflection.

Editing

HDR processing (5 exposures) and quite usual stuff like bringing shadows, and adding some tonal contrast with curves.

In my camera bag

Good old Canon 6D, Tamron Wide Angle 17-35 f/2.8-4, Canon 85mm f/1.8 for portraits and shallow depth of field, and the Tele Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 VC. All that with Benro Tripod to have a steady and sharp exposure.

Feedback

Try the river banks, meadows to capture fog at the dusk. Check your weather report to see the dew point. Look for compositions with a trees and be creative. Fall and Winter are perfect for shots like that. Get waterproof boots. Be patient, visit same places many times to master the compositions. You can't master the weather, but when you stubborn enough you will have your golden moment. And it's much easier to take your picture with the perfect conditions when you master the location. Remember wide angle lens kills the effect of a fog.
