Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on a balcony overlooking downtown Nashville, TN. Caitlin and I went outside because it was gorgeous weather and the clouds broke right when we started shooting giving off beautiful lighting.

Time

It was around 2:30pm

Lighting

This is all available light. With it being overcast and then the brunt break in the clouds just gave it a beautiful golden shine.

Equipment

Nikon D600, nikkor 50mm f/1.8d

Inspiration

She is a beautiful person inside and out and she naturally just flows in the moment. Always inspiring working with her.

Editing

I did basic Lightroom adjustments and then spot healing and dodge and burn in Photoshop. After that I used frequency separation to help even out the tones and harsh shadows caused by the direction the sunlight was coming from.

In my camera bag

I usually have a D600 with multiple prime lenses, collapsible ring light and spaceflight an my trusty Nikon F5 for film work.

Feedback

Practice. After basically 10 years being a Combat Photographer covering the conflict in Iraq the one thing you do is constantly shoot. Know your settings. And trust your camera.
