It always amazes me the vast number of natural wonders that exist near where you live if you are willing to look around. I was driving along a road near my home and happened to glance to the woods to my left. I have done that probably hundreds of times without anything catching my eye. This day was very different when I casually looked! I saw this heron's nest way up at the top of a tree! It was Spring so I knew I might see more birds getting ready for new life to emerge, but I was surprised at how active the birds were! I decided to abandon the errand I was on and return home to get my camera with the hopes the birds were still there when I returned. Luckily, I saw that they were so I parked in a lot across the street from where I saw the nest. In order to get this image, I ended up having to stand in the muddy swamp water behind a tree just off the road, but it was worth it. I never want to disturb wildlife or encroach on their territory so I knew I had to photograph them in an awkward position. So, this image was taken while standing in muddy swamp water on uneven ground with a Canon and a 100 - 400 mm lens (handheld). Just imagine what I would have missed had I been so self absorbed that I didn't take the time to be aware of what was around me!
