Location
I took this photo near my home on the shores of Lake Erie in the Cleveland Ohio area.Time
I shot this photo late after noon towards sunset. I waited for the sun to dip down so I could use a slower shutter speed and get the blurring effect.Lighting
I shot this near sunset for the best color reflections from the sky. The lighting was perfect that day the shadows were not too dark and the highlights were not too bright. This allowed me to play with my settings to get my preferred shot. My goal was to get a shot that people really had to look at to make sense of what they were seeing. I wanted the right amount of blurring while maintaining the right amount of stillness and focus, thankfully this lighting helped me to get the shot I wanted!Equipment
For this shot I used a Sony A6500 with an adapted Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens. No other equipment was used to make this photo.Inspiration
I have a strong fascination with abstract painting and a stronger fascination with moving water. I spent days on the lake just observing how the water moves and reacts when the winds get stronger. The main inspiration was to take a photo unlike the majority of photos taken of a Lake Erie sunset.Editing
I just used Lightroom for this shot. I never use the saturation or vibrance sliders. A typical Lightroom edit consist of me using the Tone sliders and the Tone Curve bar. I will also adjust the color balance to where I feel it is most appealing to my eye. My editing processes is not super intensive I try and keep it minimal as much as I can.In my camera bag
I sold a ton of gear and have a pretty light lineup. You can find in my currently a 24mm Zeiss 1.8 for E-Mount, a Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens (with a sigma adaptor for Sony.) My two cameras I currently use are a Sony A6500 and a Sony A6300. I shoot in the water also and use a Sea Frogs Salted Line housing. When I carry a tripod with me it is a Benro Slim tripod and I have a cheap mono pod that gets the job done when needed.Feedback
Be observant, look at things differently. Move your body until you see something you like. Those are probably the two most important rules I follow. As far as technique goes for this specific shot, lower your shutter speed and try to match the speed of the wave (panning with the wave.) You should be able to freeze part of the wave and blur part of the wave. A bit of luck is involved and you keeper ratio will not be very high.. (At least from my experience)
