Location
this was taken on Highway 96 outside of Columbus, GA, as I was on my way back from Birmingham, AL to Savannah, GA.Time
It was approximately 2:00 in the afternoon. I was already tired from driving, but love these back roads - to me, these rural, backroads and 2 land highways are always much, much more interesting than interstate driving - there is always so much more character to the landscape, and I often spend my time wondering about the inhabitants of these old houses that are on the verge of falling down. I also wonder about the farmlands, smaller businesses, and restaurants. I feel like images such as this help show a certain flavor and character of a particular area.Lighting
In this case, I had set my camera to the Sepia setting, so one may not be able to tell so quickly what time of day it really was - the sun was out, and I wanted to make sure I set the filter in such a way so that the sun did not wash out the image.Equipment
I used a Nikon CoolPIx100 camera - no tripod or flash. Again, I just put the setting of the camera on Sepia.Inspiration
I was in desperate need to get out and stretch, and my intent was simply to find a gas station. I was literally in the middle of nowhere, and I was prepared to have to go for a few more miles. Then, I passed this building, and I immediately became obsessed with it!! I found a little turn off, turned around, got out of my car, and just stared at it. I went back to my car and pulled out my camera, set it on Sepia, and took the photo. It is one of my most favorite places, and this is indeed one of my most favorite photos. I intend on writing a fictional piece surrounding this photograph.Editing
No post processing -In my camera bag
Just my camera and my tripod - I want new lenses, but have not procured one yet.Feedback
Spontaneity is what works best for me. Stumbling on a good photo, for me, generally happens 'in the moment'. I rarely "plan" this sort of a picture. I have always had an odd sense of adventure. Many years ago, the youth pastor at the church I attended told me that some of his own best times are the ones that were never planned for. This has proven to be true in many elements of my own life, and some of the my friends and family's favorite pictures are ones of objects or scenery that I just happened upon rather by accident. The 'planned' things never work well for me, so my advice is to embrace the spontaneous, unplanned things: they wander into your path for a REASON!!! Seize it!!!
