While visiting villages near Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, I befriended this young man as we walked from village to village. I asked if I could take his photo; I got lucky as he agreed. In the late evening light, I posed him; he removed his hood, but I asked him to put it back on. I think the hood and his expression add to the moodiness of the image.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small village near Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. I was working with a group delivering personal hygiene items to the villagers. This young man was carrying a large box of hand soap. As I walked alongside him I noticed his strong facial features highlighted by the soft afternoon light. I asked if I could take his picture; he obliged and removed his hood, but I asked him to put it back on.

Time

This was taken late afternoon with very nice soft light.

Lighting

Late afternoon light filtered through some tall trees, so I didn't get any harsh shadows.

Equipment

Olympus OM-D EM1-MKii, 24-80 2.8

Inspiration

The strong, rugged features of this young man's face caught my attention.

Editing

Very minimal post. Cropping, some highlight/shadow adjustments.

In my camera bag

I shoot Olympus MFT using mainly the 12-40 f2.8 (24-80 equiv.) PRO lens as my "walk around" lens. It is small, razor sharp, fast, and light. I also use the 40-150 f2.8 (80-300 equiv.) Also small and fast.

Feedback

Always try to get out of any harsh light. I had been walking with this young man for awhile so we got comfortable with each other so it made it easier to connect with him and ask him permission to take his photo.
