Location
I took this photo while on a walk with my dogs and my mother's dog. They could play as much as they liked and I got the chance to capture them in action.Time
This was taken during our afternoon walk on a cloudy day.Lighting
Since the sky was grey most of the time, there was not much interesting light. Luckily, the snow reflected enough of it to produce a decent photo.Equipment
For this shot, I used a Canon Eos 1d-X mark 2 and the Canon 70-200 mm L IS II lens with no other equipment attached.Inspiration
I always have my camera with me when we go for a walk with our pooches. Although have taken a lot of photos of them and their canine friends already, I never seem to get bored.Editing
As I did not want to use a higher ISO, the dog was relatively dark in the original raw file, so I had to brighten it. I also straightened the horizon, cropped the picture a bit, enhanced the overall contrast as well as the colors and I sharpened the dog, but most importantly, I cloned out a black lab that looked like a big black stain from the background. In my camera bag
I don't like to carry around a lot of equipment. When I need or want to be mobile, I usually bring just one lens that stays attached to my camera. The kind of lens depends on the kind of photos I plan to take that day. I only bring along my tripod/monopod or any additional lens or camera if I know that I will not be moving around a lot. Most of the time, I don't need a very slow shutter speed, so I don't mind predominantly taking handheld shots.Feedback
Being at eye level with the animal you want to capture is usually the best way to capture interesting photos of that animal. Part of their body needs to be above the (straightened) horizon line if you want the photo to have more impact. It is often not enough to kneel down for this kind of shot, so I wouldn't necessarily wear my best clothes if I there's a chance that I will end up crawling in mud. You also need to remember that playing dogs do not always see you as an obstacle, so be prepared to have some bruises and/or drool here and there. Another thing to consider is the background. Try finding one that does not distract the viewer too much in terms of clutter and colors. A blurred background makes the viewer focus even more on your subject. One last thing I learned the hard way: Always shoot a little wider than you need so that you can straighten the horizon without cutting off pieces of your pooch. A cropped photo looks better than one with a cut off tail, paw, ear, etc.
