Location
The photo was taken in Chicago by the Lake Michigan waterfront. It was during one of those merciless Chicagoan blizzards. It turned the whole area into a winter wonderland. I grabbed my camera and rushed outside with great excitement at this wonderful, creative opportunity.Time
The photo was taken at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon, just before sunset. It is one of my most awarded photos and by far one of my favorite shots. I was doing my scouting walk around the park at Foster beach. Viewed from the water it makes a somewhat gloomy, though picturesque impression.Lighting
When I saw the man jogging straight through the middle of the path surrounded by those snowy dreamy trees, I quickly thought of the best way of immortalizing the moment. I decided that the low light created by the intense dark clouds can be adjusted with some artificial light source. So I grabbed my SB-800 Nikon flash and installed it on the camera.Equipment
This was shot on my Nikon D7100 with the AF-S NIKKOR 24–120mm f/4G ED VR and SB-800 Nikon flash.Inspiration
What greater inspiration can you get than from an engaging winter storm given by Mother Nature. The previous winter in Chicago did not offer us a lot of snowy days so I jumped at the occasion of the first snow storm. The beautiful landscape of a Chicago park right next to the lake offered great winter scenery.Editing
I did a minimal processing in Camera Raw and Photoshop where I adjusted the exposure, fixed the grain from the ISO and enhanced the contrast and tone.In my camera bag
The first thing I have in my camera bag is my Nikon D7100. Next to that I pack my AF-S NIKKOR 24–120mm f/4G ED VR that gives me a wide range of possibilities in capturing action even at further distances. I also make sure that I am adding my Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G for sharper images, especially if I am to run into very interesting figures that will make unique portraits.Feedback
I know a lot of photographers suggest to plan ahead and yes, this is very important. Scouting locations and trying to understand and control light gives you a great deal of success in getting the desired outcome. My personal advise is to let your creative juices flow. Relax and look around. Let yourself inspired by the beauty that surrounds us and make the best out of challenging light condition or environments.
