Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the front yard on my farm. I was a new photographer, still teaching myself. When I walked out to work that morning, the sky was filled with smoke from a controlled burn in the forest, just the other side of my property line. The view was incredible, so I took the shot and it turned out so much better than anticipated.

Time

This was around mid morning.

Lighting

The lighting was so unique and I wanted desperately to capture what I was seeing, so that I could continue to look at it for years to come. The way the sun peaked through the clouds and smoke was breathtaking. I managed to capture it almost perfectly.

Equipment

Capture with an iPhone XS Max. Aperture: f/2.4 Exposure: 1/730 Focal length: 6/1

Inspiration

The view was so unique and I was in awe of what I was seeing. I knew it was something that needed to be preserved forever.

Editing

I did a few simple Lightroom adjustments to get it as close as possible to what I was seeing. It turned out almost perfect!

In my camera bag

I always have my iPhone, which honestly I use for most of my spur of the moment photos. I also have my Canon T6 with just a couple of cheap lenses that it came with.

Feedback

If it’s beautiful to you, it will be beautiful to others as well. Keep an open eye and a camera on hand. Try to imagine what that view will look like when captured. Is it Something that you would enjoy seeing a lot? If so, capture it. Don’t be afraid to take the shot. In fact, take a lot. If it’s not what you want, you can always press delete.
