Reminiscing my visit to Kinderdijk in the southern part of Holland, in April, 2016 (a solo road trip through the Netherlands!)
Kinderdijk is in the province of South Holland, located about 9 miles east of Rotterdam.
“Kinderdijk is situated in the Alblasserwaard polder at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. To drain the polder(a low-lying tract of land enclosed by dikes that form an artificial hydrological entity), a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands. The windmills of Kinderdijk are one of the best-known Dutch tourist sites. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.” ~Wikipedia
The weather that day was not unlike the weather we are experiencing these days in California-heavy intermittent rainfall followed by sunshine! After taking a tour through a working windmill, I had to take refuge from a downpour in another one that sported a restaurant on the bottom floor. It’s quite a hike around the canals where the 19 windmills are located. But beautiful sights all around! The skies were amazing, full of fluffy rain-clouds! And the lovely windmill!
