Behind The Lens

Location

Funny thing is I don't actually remember exactly where this photo was taken...I believe it was taken in Fort Colonge Quebec Canada. There was an animal display with all kinds of animals and birds... This handsome owl was sitting on a perch just waiting to be photographed

Time

It was mid day and in a treed/forested setting. So it was a challenge to get a shot with consistent lighting.

Lighting

Of course the original was a color photo. The eyes were so piercing. I was experimenting with photoshop back then and a basic exercise was to convert it to black and white and pop the eyes with some selective coloring. It was really a no brainer to do this since the conversion to black and white turned out so well. I didn't want to lose those eyes popping this back to original color turned out to be the best of both worlds.

Equipment

This shot was taken before I bought my Nikon. It was taken with a Kodak EasyShare ZD710 point and shoot. At 54.3mm, f/3.6, 1/250s and an ISO 320. There was enough light to not need the flash.

Inspiration

It was a kewl looking owl with these amazing yellow eyes... who could resist.

Editing

Yes, converted to black and white then reinstated the original yellow eyes.

In my camera bag

Do for an upgrade. But now using a Nikon D60 with 18-55mm and a 70-200mm lenses. Tripod.

Feedback

Sometimes things look great in Black and white... sometimes not so much... doesn't hurt to convert your shot to b&w and see how it looks... just might be your next gem!!!
