Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Destin Florida, one of my favorite beaches in the world. The sand is white quartz so the water is emerald in colour and always clear as the sediment settles immediately to the bottom in a fierce storm. It is famous for it's beautiful sunsets as well.

Time

This was taken mid morning when the fog was just lifting. I wanted to take the shot earlier but waited until I could capture a good length of fencing to give it depth and draw your eye in.

Lighting

I loved the eeryness of the lighting with the sun starting to shine through a bit, giving a tinge of blue in the grays. I was walking without my Canon and only had my Samsung cell phone and was at the mercy of the automatic setting. Sometimes you get lucky.

Equipment

Like I mentioned earlier, I was walking on the beach in the morning. I hadn't brought my Canon 6D as I hadn't planned a photo shoot. Sometimes the conditions and scene catch your eye and you use whatever is available. I was at the mercy of the settings used by my phone. It result was much better than I had hoped. A good example that you don't always need your 3,000$ equipment to capture the beauty that your eye detects.

Inspiration

I was walking along this morning on the beach and the fog was intense. You couldn't see very far into it. As the sun warmed the air, the fog began to thin. I walked by this stretch of beach that is lined snow fence to contain the prevailing winds and help keep the sand from blowing out to sea. The scene smacked me and I had to capture it to the best of my phone's ability. I was very pleased with the result. Always be on the lookout for scenes that impact you, and if you don't have your camera with you...use your phone so that the image doesn't become a memory.

Editing

No post-processing editing was done.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 6D camera with 3 lenses, a Canon EF50mm 1.4, a Canon EF100mm macro and the Canon EF 24-105 lenses. I have 2 flashes the Canon 600EX and the Canon 270EX. I also carry a number of filters, lens cleaner, clothes and air brush that comes in handy when doing beach shots. I didn't have this equipment with me but took the shot with my A5 Samsung phone.

Feedback

No matter what equipment you have, your eye is the most important of all. Don't be afraid to use your cell phones if you something captures your eye! I find it's always better than loosing the opportunity. Another word of advice, be patient. If the lighting conditions or weather isn't ideal, wait until it is.
