Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken on the Yahtennii bridge in Saint Petersburg, which is right near Gazprom arena - place, where some of World Cup 2018 matches were hosted

Time

The shot was taken in late evening, around 10 PM, but as it was during winter season evenings are night dark in this city

Lighting

No additional light was used

Equipment

Camera Sony A77Mk2, Lens Tamron 60mm F2, Tripod

Inspiration

I was waiting for my wife after her job and since I had a couple of minutes I went on the Yahtennii bridge to savor the view. My first idea of taking this shot was pure geometry - I wanted to knock bridge ascending line against grandiose Arena curves. But as I prepared long exposure shot, there appeared a walker along the bridge. All of a sudden I realized that it could boost my photography main idea to the contrast between sizes of lonely walking stranger and colossal building, with bridge line there to separate them. It was a pure luck

Editing

I usually do very little PP, just like working with shadows and highlights in the raw file before converting it

In my camera bag

If I don't intend to shoot anything special, I carry my Sony A7RMkII and Sony 50 mm 1.8, nothing more

Feedback

I don't think there's a lot of my merit about this shot: to capture a place you, mostly, just need to be there, I also had some luck with that stranger passing by. Still, that evening was my first experience with long exposure night shots and since then I strongly believe that tripod is a must have for any photographer. That relatively cheap device can boost up anyone's photography arsenal, especially during dark winter nights
