Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire in the UK. As a member of the living history group I had good opportunity to take shots like this.

Time

This was about six o'clock on a summers evening and three hours prior to sunset.

Lighting

I chose this time of day as the natural light is not too harsh and yet still good enough for flash less photography. Which I personally feel helps when wanting to produce a b/w image.

Equipment

Canon EOS350D with a Tamron AF 70-300 Tele-Macro lens with a UV filter

Inspiration

I love trying to capture an image that could have been taken in the past. That along with my passion for living history from medieval through to 2nd world war. sadly I lost most of these images and this one has extra meaning as the soldier in the foreground is my Father.

Editing

I use the built in photo software that comes with Windows 10, for simple transfer from colour to b/w like this which require little more than a removal of colour and a little cropping

In my camera bag

along with my Canon EOS 350D I carry my Canon EOS 600 35mm loaded with Kodak ISO 400 film, this carries a Sigma UC Zoom 70-210mm lens while for the digital I have my Tamron AF 70-300 Tele-Macro lens along with the standard Canon 18-55mm zoom lens. lens hood and a set of filters which I can use with either set up. For all day shoots I will take a tripod and remote switch. half a dozen batteries and compact flash cards for the 350D and several rolls of film for the EOS 600.

Feedback

Whenever I'm shooting historic images like this I choose to use the sports action setting, with its burst of quick fire shots this allows me to leave the subject to just work/act naturally and removes any need for posing the subject and using an 8GB flash card I have yet to run out of space for storing a days images
