Location
This photo was taken on location at Teneriffe. It is a historic riverside inner suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I am a self-taught portrait photographer and had been taking photos on and off for more than 8 years.Time
This photo was taken in the late afternoon as the sun was fading. Hence it was shot at f1.4 with a slightly higher ISO.Lighting
I wanted the subject to pop, therefore the 85mm focal length and shooting at the widest aperture of f1.4 means I was able to achieve the result with the background been blurred out.Equipment
This was shot with the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera and the EF 85mm F1.4 IS L. It was natural light only, therefore no other equipment was used.Inspiration
I love urban environmental fashion portraits and the old historic inner-city suburb is an ideal location with the old red brick woolshed buildings and charming laneways. It is my favourite location in Brisbane.Editing
Post-process started in Adobe lightroom to fine-tune the exposure, highlight and shadows etc then it was exported to photoshop for further retouching. The process involved minor skin healing, frequency separation, curve modifier to brighten highlights and finally colour graded. In my camera bag
I travel extremely light and I love shooting with a prime lens. In my small compact camera bag house my EOS R with an EF 85mm f1.4 and an RF 50mm f1.2 lens. I also have a 5 in 1 fold-out reflector/diffuser with me for when I need to bounce some lights or diffuse the patchy sun lights.Feedback
Location scouting is important. I usually try to be at the location at the time I am planning to shoot a few days ahead and do a walk around and noted down the shot location one, two, three etc and study the sunlight direction and surrounds. Form an image in your head where the subject will be and how the lighting is going to fall on your subject. I often take some pictures of the shoot location with my iPhone as I walk around the place.
