Location
The photo was taken at an commercial/industrial estate. It was a footpath connecting two street between two industrial building. The footpath is about 25 metre long and 5 metre wide. There are professional graffiti on both side of the walls. I stumble across these beautiful graffiti whilst scouting location for photo shoots.Time
The photo was taken close to mid day with the sun high in the sky. The wall behind me was covered by hash sunlight and the wall in front was still in shade. As I'm using a Canon Flash, I will not be able to overpower the mid day sun, therefore I choose to shoot against the wall in the shade.Lighting
It was single light setup with a Canon 580EX in a beauty dish to the top left corner just outside the picture frame. A lastolite round reflector was placed next to me which catches the sun light as a fill. I choose to use the gold reflector to gives a warm golden glow to the model.Equipment
For this photo, it was shot using a Canon 50D with EF-S 17-55 mm F2.8 lens. The off camera flash was controlled by the Canon ST-E2 controller. The setting for the shot was at ISO 100, 35 mm focal length with F8 Aperture and 1/250 shutter speed. No tripod was used.Inspiration
I wanted a edge life style photo for my portfolio. I collaborated with a professional hair and mark up artist and a great model to come up with this photo.Editing
Post processing was done in Photoshop with curves and level tweaking to brig out the highlight and contrast with minimal retouching on the model. It was great to work with model that is naturally good looking plus the awesome work from hair and markup artist to bring the professional look to the overall image. In my camera bag
MY Camera bag consist of my 2 canon flash (580ex and 430ex), 3 lens ( 85mm 1.8, 70-200 IS F4 and 17-55 IS F2.8), the Canon 50D and the remote flash trigger ST-E2. I would also carry flash modifier with me on location shoots. The Canon flash usually been use with either a brolly box for a nice soft wrap around lighting or the beauty dish. I also use the reflector with either white/silver/gold depend on the look I want out of the image.Feedback
Scouting out the location and re planning is very important for a model shoot. Have an ideas and some example location/pose you did like to capture. I would have a chat with the model before hand and go through some examples with them so they have an ideas of what to expect. I would also highly recommended getting a hair and markup artist for the shoot. It just gives that extra professional edge to your image and can sometime save a lot of post editing.
