Behind The Lens

Location

Driving around country side close to our summer/winter cottage and stopping whenever I find interesting subjects is one of my habits. This pic was taken at 11 AM on a beautiful winter day when I spotted a picturesque house and stopped the car. Unfortunately the left front tire sank into a ditch under snow and the car was stack there. After about 15 minutes kicking snow and cursing myself luckily a local farmer passed by and towed me out of snow. However, I also spent time taking this picture, so all's well that ends well :-).

Time

Usually midday is is not my favorite time to take landscape pictures. However, snowy and clear winter days can be exceptions. Blue sky and white snow can give a beautiful palette for photos.

Lighting

Hard midday winter light can be - and is - tricky. A polarized filter is a must.

Equipment

I took this handheld with Nikon D810 with a Nikkor 24-120 attached. ISO 100, f/4.5, 1/250 s. And as said, a polarized filter is a must in these light conditions.

Inspiration

The desolate road and cottage, the orange/brown trees combining with blue sky and white snow.

Editing

This was quite an effortless editing process. I cropped a little from the sky and opened a bit shadows and added slightly clarity and vibrance.

In my camera bag

I pack lightly on random shooting like this. Usually D850 body and one wide zoom 24-70 and a tele 70-300 or 200-500 if interesting fauna, like deer or storks, appear in front of me.

Feedback

Actually, while this was taken on a bright and sunny day, a rain or blizzard can add more dramatic feeling. Main thing is to go out and have fun with the camera - regardless of weather conditions.
