Unless intentional, avoid direct sunlight in the middle part of the day and go for the softer tones offered by that early morning light or mid to late evening.Equipment

Do some prior research by visiting if you can. If, like me, you are unable to do this, turn up early and so some scouting around before you start taking your shots. I try not to change lenses whilst I'm out, so deciding on which lens to use before you leave the house, I think, is worthwhile.
