Behind The Lens
Location
This was part of a family portraiture shoot a loyal client and friend of mine asked me to do for her at her farming property at Vesper,Gippsland Victoria... Lia is her daughter and has a lovely bond with these 2 canine pets, and it was a spontaneous moment I loved to capture here...Time
Around 2.30 pm,Bright Summer's day in February with Programmed Exposure but with a judgement call adjustment of -1.5 for preserving a natural look to the exposure and scene...Lighting
Lighting here was on the bright side, with only faint cloud cover so shadows could have been a problem but the above exposure adjustment worked well,as did using the zoom lens in a "long relief" setting as opposed to a wide angle one..( the standard lenshood was also deployed here)Equipment
This sitting was used with a modest but very well featured Pentax k100 d Super dslr...It's design is well suited to It's capabilities (everything works well once one is familiarised with it)..The Sigma f3.5-5.6/ 70-300 mm zoom kit lens is a bit slow, but with care and expertise can produce more than useful images of surprisingly good to way above average quality! Camera was carefully hand held,at a shutter speed of around 250 th of a second, and the camera's "subject pre-focus mode" was used before final framing & exposure...Inspiration
Always a lover of pets and their connection with their family and owners,be they young or old,I made sure to record this moment for Lia and her family...It is a favourite photo of mine from this photo shoot! (dogs are people too aren't they?) I did crouch for this shot to match the heights of the 3 subjects here, giving the moment an accurate perspective, and more appealing to the eye.Editing
The collage effect was posted here for effect...The original photo retains it's sharpness but I thought this rendition catches the eye for that something a little bit different! In my camera bag
These days I use a 12 mp Nikon D40x DSLR,with the main lens being a Sigma f2.8-4.5 mini-zoom, focal length 17--70mm..(Very nice) I prefer natural looking images,so not fussed about wanting a 24 mp camera(for intance) which could produce over-detailed,almost glorified-looking images... Just a personal preference, not anti-technology at this stage... I also have a new sp -500 Nikon flash for filling in unwanted shadows and a softening of harsh lighting when used as a bounce flash!Feedback
With Pets and People photos,my advice would be to be as quick and " in the moment" as you can be... Some pets are "hypo",(figure of speech) and can be easily distracted by things all around the vicinity! Getting the human element to lower themselves to the level of their pets helps the pets to settle and "focus " on the photographer too...
