Hey folks this photo is also a reminder of the upcoming dry-Summer-weather that we have reached now. Take care with all things that may start or spread fire. Still love this technically sound photo though

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken very close to my hometown of Morwell, Victoria, Australia.

Time

This was at approximately 3pm a day or so after the fearce bush fire had finally been controlled. My mates shoulder was a camera rest so I could stop down for maximum depth of field. A slowish shutter speed was required

Lighting

An eerie Natural lighting prevailed at this particular time from a lingering, but dissipating smoke haze.

Equipment

I was using my trusted Pentax K100D Super with a Sigma 18-50 mm f3.5-5.6 zoom lens. No, it's not a fast lens but with the full frame exposure processor its a great combination.

Inspiration

I wanted to record this as a reminder to us all the dangers of a dry region parched by hot summer heat & what naked flames can do to it.

Editing

No none at all. No cropping just careful framing through the viewfinder.

In my camera bag

I carry the Camera with a standard zoom lens + a 55-200mmSigma DC f 4-5.6.I rarely use filters. Spare batteries and sd memory cards. I also carry a Ricoh GXR compact reflex camera. It has a nifty electronic magnifying & detachable viewfinder. It has "0"Cm macro capability!

Feedback

The key here was to find a way to accentuate the expanse and devastation such an event can cause. You have to be calculating, careful with your framing but efficient with your time. The two fences meeting right there in the foreground leading out from that parched post emphasizes the ferocity & extent the fire damaged the countryside. A steady hand and knowing the capability of your equipment will help. A constant Self analysis of your images will, ultimately become almost "second nature"to you if you practise diligently enough.
