I'm fortunate to belong to a burlesque troupe and Middle GA and have the pleasure to work with many of the local performing members. I was able to transport my one light, fabric screen set up to the studio in Perry GA to do this session with the beautiful and talented Raven HiJinx.Time
The Bible Belt Burlesque troupe meets ever Sunday for "Sunday School" at 5:00 pm in an upstairs room. This shoot took place around 3 pm prior to the weekly meeting. But because the setup is basically a studio setup it could be shot at anytime.Lighting
The lighting is a single strobe set up behind two layers of sheer fabric hung on a backdrop stand. The strop is modified with a 60" diameter umbrella covered with a front diffusor. The light is set at 36* behind the fabric so the strobe is bounced off the inside of the umbrella, through the diffused modifier then through the double panels of fabric. The model mostly poses between the two fabric layers for a soft look or in front of both layers for a more clean image.Equipment

As a fairly new photographer I am always looking for new and simple ideas to learn from. I had seen several images of backlit photographer and was fascinated by this style and how models can express themselves. I loved how models of all shapes, ages, ethnicities, and sizes can be beautifully depicted. The two fabric layers allow for obscuring, enhancing, sensual exposure and gives the model the opportunity to portray herself as she wishes. After my first shoot in this style I found that after a few minutes of insecurity and awkwardness in manipulating the fabric, even the most inexperienced model begins to feel more comfortable and free in their expression.Editing
I do all my post processing using Photoshop 2020. The backlight style is wonderful because the washed out effect allows for minimum touch up. And I do apply a skin smooth action just to give a soft, dreamy feel to the overall composition. In my camera bag

I own 3 AlienBee's for my studio portrait and boudoir work. But I am always drawn to the simplicity of using a one light set up. I've gotten wonderful results using a single strobe with a variety of modifiers for the more artistic styles I love to shot and experiment with. My advice is to keep it simple, experiment, and learn from and enjoy the outcomes.
