Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on Sheffield Beach after the ship, The Phoenix, ran aground when her tow line snapped in heavy seas en route to the scrap yards in India.

Time

I got to the beach at 5 a.m. to avoid the crowds. This was taken just before 6 a.m.

Lighting

I loved the lighting, with sunrise coming from across the ocean, with lots of cloud around to soften the whole feel, which added to the atmosphere

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D with a Tamron 18 - 270 mm lens, mounted on a tripod, using the ambient light

Inspiration

I'm fascinated by ships and shipwrecks. As this ship had run aground close to where I lived and was very much in the news, it was my chance to get a potentially great set of photos. When I heard that she was to be floated off on the Monday's spring tide, I knew that I had to get to the beach on the Sunday

Editing

I prefer to do as little editing as possible, but for this image I boosted the contrast in the clouds. using Photoshop

In my camera bag

Because I'm crazy about macro as well as landscape photography I tend to "travel heavy" - ensuring I've always got my macro lens and ring flash, spare batteries and a set of ND filters.

Feedback

The best tips I can give for capturing a shipwreck is first to try get to the beach as soon as possible after the event. This type of event is often newsworthy and good images can fetch decent prices. From a general point though, its important to plan your shoot well. Get to the site as early as possible in order to have fewer people around. Get there early. Check the weather for additional conditions such as cloud which makes for better images than just boring blue sky
