Thank you. This is one of my favorite photos ever, but it was taken on film in 1981. I had to scan the photo. But I still love the little squirt, even though he is now 40.

Thank you. It is hard to believe that this cute child turned into the 40-year old that he is today.

Thank you, Jayne. Yes, in 1981 he was a sweetie. He turns 40 in a few months and is no longer a sweetie. Oh well....

Thank you. Yes, in 1981 he was a sweetie. He turns 40 in a couple of months and is no longer as sweet. Oh well....

Location
This photo was taken in Thousand Oaks, California, in 1981 when my son was 3 years old. He is now 40.Time
This was taken in mid morning.Lighting
Natural sunlight. It was still early enough in the day so the sun was coming from an angle rather than being overhead.Equipment
This was shot on film on a Canon EOS Elan 7e with a 50mm Canon lens wide open at f/1.4. The 5x7 photo was scanned into .jpg format in 2018.Inspiration
A local farm had created a pumpkin patch shortly before Halloween. My son looked so cute and was so happy. I was lucky to get all the elements I needed for this shot.Editing
The .jpg file was brought into Adobe Lightroom for some slight cropping and contrast enhancement. Basically, what you are seeing is how it looked when shot.In my camera bag
My Canon EOS 5D Mark IV always has my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L ii lens mounted on it. That is my go-to lens for the majority of my photos. I also carry several lenses: Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM [used for this particular photo], and a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. I try to shoot with natural light all the time, but on those occasions where I need an external light source, I use either a Neewer CN-216 LED panel or a Canon Speedlite 580EX. I have tripods by Slik, 3Pod and Manfrotto. Of course, my Canon EOS Elan 7e still lurks in my closet in case I ever get the urge to shoot with film again.Feedback
The rules for outdoor portraits apply here. I shot with the lens at its maximum aperture (f/1.4) and stood fairly close to my son to achieve some bokeh in the distant background. The sun was at a low angle because of the time of year. The 'golden glow' of sunrise would have been better, but 3 year olds don not get up that early as a rule.
