Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on North Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.

Time

Beach sunrise photos are one of my favorite landscapes to capture. This was my last opportunity of the trip and the morning started out with some rain.

Lighting

The way the rising sun illuminated the clouds as it crept above the horizon was spectacular.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 6D Mark ii and a 24-105 mm lens; no other equipment.

Inspiration

I had gotten up early several mornings on this trip to capture the sunrise but had been disappointed every time with cloudy and rainy weather. This day was perfect. The cloud formation made for a very interesting landscape. Watching the light slowly spread across the clouds was a beautiful, spiritual moment.

Editing

I always do some post-processing on my photos, but I always try to keep them looking as much like the actual scene as possible. Since I edited this photo, I have learned a lot more about the process, but that's what makes us all better...to keep learning!

In my camera bag

The only camera I own is my Canon EOS 6D Mark ii. I have two lenses; the Canon EF 24-105 and a Canon EF 75-300mm Telephoto Zoom Lens.

Feedback

To capture beach sunrises, you have to be willing to get up and get out there early. Know the orientation of the sunrise; where does it rise and where will I have a good view? Check the weather and sunrise times online for your area. Prep your equipment the night before and have it ready to grab and go. Try to be on the beach at least 30 min before (even earlier is better) for the blue hour which can be spectacular. Be patient and take your time, but know that as with sunsets, sunrise lighting changes quickly. Don't get discouraged if it isn't an amazing sunrise, there will be another chance tomorrow! Appreciate the amazing sunrises you capture because there are never two that look exactly the same.
