Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Lian, Batangas, Philippines when I was invited by one of my friends in their villa. I am a self-taught photographer and still trying to learn more about photography.

Time

This photo is one of my favorite sunset shot. It was taken on March 14, 2015 at 6:19 pm.

Lighting

One of the reasons why I love sunset is that I used the sun as my backlight to give emphasis to my subject. One of the techniques also is to reduce your ISO to 100 or 200, used automatic white balance, and used no flash.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D300 with Nikkor 18-105mm lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

In every places I visited, I always make sure that I have a good shot of that place. You never know if you will have a chance to visit that place again. I maximize every minute to take a great shot and include elements aside from the sun and the mountain at the back.

Editing

Sunset photography requires minimal processing and that is why it is my favorite subject. With this, I only used Window Live Photo Gallery to adjust a little of shadows, brightness, highlights, and sharpened the photo. I do not use Photoshop and I don’t know how to use it.

In my camera bag

This photo was shot more than five years ago and that time I used Nikon D300 with Nikkor 18-105mm lens. For almost three years now, I always have FujiFilm XT10 with Fujinon 16-55mm lens with my extra lens Fujinon 50-230mm. I also bring my waterproof camera FujiFilm XP120.

Feedback

If you want to shoot sunset, arrive early on the location so you will have an idea of what will be your subject or the elements you want to include in your photo. Set your camera settings, sometimes this is my mistake, I always forgot to set my camera during the shoot. Go to unknown or hidden beaches or places. I am new in photography and I would say I learned a lot by reviewing other photographers' work and paintings of famous artists. Be open with feedback and comments from your fellow photographers.
