The European goldfinch behaves like a migrant. The northern populations migrate to the south; the winter quarters are located in the Mediterranean area.

The southern populations can be sedentary, wandering, and even migrating towards North Africa. The migration is diurnal, in more or less numerous groups.

The migratory passage is prolonged; the bulk of the autumnal migration occurs between September and November; that of spring occurs between February and May.
