Behind The Lens

Location

This self portrait was taken in a small one bedroom apartment in Minnesota while I chilled with my cat listening to an eclectic mix of songs on YouTube because I was too broke for Spotify. There was definitely some ramen on my nightstand. Early 20s just struggling to stay afloat.

Time

It was late in the evening, I should have been sleeping. I had work in the morning. But sometimes you just need to kind of “vent”, for lack of a better word, through art, before sleep will come.

Lighting

I wanted to project the strong, bold woman I am—to spite what I went through. Bold lighting, bold colors. Soft, yet strong. Gentle, but fierce.

Equipment

Just a desk lamp and an iPhone 8 Plus, no flash. I set a timer on my iPhone camera and propped it up against two books on my bed and ta-da! Sometimes you have to do the best you can with what you have and get creative.

Inspiration

I was feeling like a boss—like I had control for the first time in a long while, having recently finally built up the courage and left an abusive relationship I had been in at that time. I had gotten my own apartment and a new job. I was starting to date new people, (one of whom turned out to be my wonderful now fiancé). I was feeling confident for the first time in a long while.

Editing

The photo was edited using several apps on my iPhone, including Lightroom and PicsArt. Editing might be my favorite part of the process. I love effects and getting really artsy with my photos.

In my camera bag

A lot of the time it’s just my phone. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 11 Pro. It’s got a pretty impressive camera. I have a special love for mobile photography and editing. But I also recently got a Sony Alpha 6000 and I am SO in love with it. It’s a great camera. Yet I still do all my editing on my iPhone.

Feedback

Photography, art in general, is a great way to process your feelings. Don’t worry about how many ‘likes’ a photo is going to get, or even awards. Shoot your photos for you. Capture what makes you feel something real and raw. Or what makes you feel happy. Or just simply what you think looks cool. People will gravitate to them naturally if the feeling behind them is real. Also don’t be afraid of editing. It’s fun, and not everything has to look realistic. Go ahead and get weird with it and express yourself. And don’t forget when times get hard, photography is a great therapeutic outlet.
