I actually snapped this shot in my backyard. We had just had a significant snowfall overnight.Time
I took this photo on a sunny morning, just after the rather significant snowstorm overnight. It was at around 9am and my dog, Monty, just bounded outside and started to romp in the snow. This was the only serious face he had the entire time!Lighting
I think that nature actually made this lighting particularly spectacular. The sun had just come out from the clouds, the snow was thick and crystal-like on the ground. When the sun shown off of the brilliant white snow, there was something more warm and soft about it rather than a very harsh sunlight.Equipment
NIKON D7200, no tripod, no special filter. My settings were: Aperture 71/10?ISO 100?Shutter 10/2500?Focal Length 3000/10?Inspiration
It was a gorgeous, still morning. Snow had blanketed the entire backyard in several inches. Monty bounded outside and it was his pure joy of the moment playing in all of the fresh snow that made me run upstairs and grab my camera. I wanted to capture this moment.Editing
I did one processing of this to adjust the black and white output and I did take out a particularly noticeable sun glare spot. Other than that it was a fairly simple edit!In my camera bag
My camera, lenses, cleaning cloth, an extra pair of socks and a container for things I find on my walks. I also keep a notebook these days when I want to journal.Feedback
If you see a moment like this and think to yourself "oh my camera is in the other room" or "I'm in my pjs" or "it's too cold out" - fight the urge to ignore the moment and just get out there and get the shot. I ended up with very cold feet, a wet robe and an icy nose but, for this shot of my beautiful boy, it was worth it.
